What does home mean to you?

The question that we asked a group of Year 8 students at St Peters School in Huntingdon, and their responses were insightful.

Our Assistant Business Manager, Harriet, and Project Manager for settle, Amber Cooper, visited the school at the beginning of June. It is important to the client, and to Burmor, to understand what home means to the community and the generations ahead, to shape an awareness of the differences that the homes we build, make to their lives.

The session started with a mind map; the students shared their thoughts on what home meant to them, sparking creativity and in-depth discussion about the importance of safety, comfort, and community. They were then put to the challenge of producing an A4 design; how home looked to them.

They were using examples of modern methods of construction, classic fairytale cottages, mocking up floor plans, landscaping and more - some fantastic designs came out of it!

There were engaging conversations throughout, and at least 1/3 of the students in the room had already considered construction as a career choice (and over half of them female!). We had future Architects, Engineers, Carpenters, and Surveyors amongst us, and they engaged in great conversation about how their career paths would look and why they have chosen to consider construction as a career.

A positive day, with their finished artwork being mounted onto an aluminum panel to be displayed on the hoarding at our site on Low Road, St Ives - we can’t wait to see it!
