from affordable homes to hedgehog homes.

5 Hedgehog Homes donated to Heather’s Hedgehog Hostel as the harsh weather rolls in.

Burmor have swapped from building affordable homes to building Hedgehog Homes…well not completely!

On Friday, Jack, Megan and Piet stopped by Heathers Hedgehog Hostel to donate 5 new homes to help contribute towards Heather’s mission to have 100 hedgehog homes in the town of Chatteris in time for Christmas. Our staff were welcomed by the fabulous volunteers who work across the different hubs they have set up to help rehabilitate the hedgehogs before releasing them back into the wild.

About Heather and the team:

Heather Johnson, 49, set up the rescue service 10 years ago in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, and it is now a registered charity with 45 volunteers. She is currently caring for 25 prickly patients but with capacity at 12, helpers are having to foster a further 20 hedgehogs. Due to a bumper breeding season and unpredictable weather, life is difficult for hoglets in the wild. Wet conditions have also caused a shortage of natural food - and mild weather meant they were not hibernating properly. Heather has already taken in more than 300 poorly hedgehogs this year - normally the entire annual number.

Our responsibility:

With all of our projects, it is not only important to establish a relationship with the local community groups, but to understand our environmental responsibility too and particularly with our site at Fairbairn Way in Chatteris, this targeted support is topical. We understand the impact that our developments have when being built, so it is vital we consider not just the local people but nature too.

‘A report by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, found that rural hedgehog populations had declined by between 30% and 75% in parts of the countryside between 2000 and 2022, but that urban populations appeared to be stabilising.’

Our site will be live until 2026, therefore we’ll continue to support the great cause as much as we can during that time. Please visit Heather’s website for more information about the great work being done.
