Exploring the World of Construction: A Visit to Brooke Hill Academy.

At Burmor Construction, we are always eager to inspire the next generation of builders, engineers, and architects. Recently, Connor and Jack had the pleasure of visiting Brooke Hill Academy to engage with their pupils and introduce them to the exciting world of construction. It was an fun filled morning with hands-on activities, learning, and lots of creativity!

Educating the Next Generation About Construction

Our goal during this visit was to provide the pupils with a deeper understanding of the construction sector and the importance of our local building site on Brooke Road. The pupils were able to explore various aspects of construction, from the basics of building materials to the design and planning that goes into creating safe and sustainable structures. Through interactive discussions, we aimed to spark their curiosity and give them a clearer picture of what happens behind the scenes in and around the construction site.

Hands-On Activities to Learn and Have Fun

To make the experience more engaging, we set up a couple of activities that allowed the students to learn through play and teamwork. These activities provided a fun and interactive way to understand the concepts we were teaching.

Building Lego Structures:

The first activity was constructing Lego structures. We provided the pupils with a range of Lego bricks, challenging them to build something using their imagination or follow the plans. While the students were busy building, we explained the importance of structure, foundation, and balance in construction. As they worked together in teams, they quickly learned how to plan, design, and execute their ideas. It was a fantastic way for them to get a hands-on understanding of what it takes to create a building from the ground up—just on a smaller scale!

Mini Timber Frame Houses:

The next activity was constructing our mini timber frame houses. This hands-on project was designed to help the students grasp the fundamentals of building a timber frame, which is commonly used in the construction of homes and buildings. They worked in groups to assemble the pieces of wood to create sturdy little houses using a variety of flathead screwdrivers and battery powered drills. As they followed the step-by-step process, they learned about the tools, techniques, and safety precautions used by professional builders.

By the end of the activity, each group had successfully de-constructed and built back up their own timber frame house—complete with a strong structure and aesthetic appeal. It was an excellent way for them to understand the construction process while developing problem-solving and teamwork skills.

A Meaningful Connection to the Local Community

What made this visit even more special was the connection to our local building site. We took the time to talk about the ongoing project in the area, explaining the roles of different professionals involved in construction, such as architects, engineers, and skilled tradespeople. By tying our activities back to real-world applications, we hoped to show the students that the world of construction is not just about bricks and mortar; it's about creating spaces where people can live, work, and thrive.

Looking Forward to Future Collaborations

Our visit to Brooke Hill Academy was a huge success, and we were thrilled by the students' enthusiasm and creativity. We hope that by sparking an interest in construction, we can inspire more young minds to pursue careers in this exciting field. We are already looking forward to more opportunities to engage with them, and in the future, host a visit at the site.
